NARN Legal & Policy Internships

NARN is excited to offer internships/externships to law students, graduate students, and junior/senior undergraduate students who are seeking opportunities in animal law, local and federal legislation and policy, advocacy and activism, and experience working with a small but tenacious nonprofit focusing on animal rights and social justice. Applications accepted on a rolling basis.

Qualifications:

• Current enrollment as a 1L, 2L, 3L, or 4L law student, or,
• Current enrollment as graduate student or junior/senior undergraduate student working towards a degree in public policy, political science, non-profit management, pre-law, biology, social or environmental justice, or other applicable degree relevant to NARN’s work and mission.
• Dedication to animal rights activism or interested in becoming involved in animal rights activism.
• Sincere interest in ethical veganism and advancing animal rights.
• Willingness to accept a variety of assignments.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent research and writing skills.
• Ability to commit to a full-time or part-time schedule.

Specific duties may include:

• Tracking local and regional rule and comment processes for pressing issues pertaining to wildlife, animals used in agriculture or labs, environmental justice/sustainability, and/or climate change.
• Participating in reforming Washington State’s CAFO permitting process to protect our waterways from runoff pollution.
• Tracking planned rulemaking within the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and writing comprehensive and relevant public comment in response to rulemaking.
• Tracking and researching the University of Washington’s animal lab-testing procedures.
• Creating and presenting a training on the Freedom of Information Act for NARN members and stakeholders.
• Researching and developing your own actionable items that fit within NARN’s mission and values, listed here.
• Attending NARN’s committee meetings with an opportunity to present on relevant research topics and/or facilitate.
• Assist in planning legislative session activities, including potential outreach to lawmakers, policy partners, and other relevant officials.
• Assist in drafting bills for introduction into session.

General duties may include:

• Researching administrative, and/or criminal, and/or tort legal issues, and policy and legislative issues relevant to animal law and animal activism, including identifying potential strategic initiatives that the NARN board may act on to further NARN’s goals and mission.
• Assist in outreach to members and other supporters of NARN regarding actionable opportunities to further animal rights within the Pacific Northwest.
• Help draft project pages, email action alerts, and letters to State Representatives and other relevant decision makers.
• Collaborate with NARN board members and committee leaders on issues as needed.
