Many, many kudos and gold stars to everyone
that helped make the Folklife Festival a hugely successful
one for veg outreach. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of
David, Anu, Bryan, Nancy F., Nancy P., Claudine, Brian,
Andrew, Mark and Michael, we were able to distribute over
900 Veg Restaurant Guides, and over 2,100 Vegan Outreach
brochures (Why Vegans, Guide to Cruelty Free Living and
Compassionate Choices) this past weekend. WAY TO GO PEOPLE!
This coming weeks looks like a slow one,
but not for the NARN Board! We are working on getting the
rest of the new NARN website put together, composing a NARN
Brochure, and much much more.
The new NARN Board will be meeting on June 3rd (see UpComing
Events), so stop by if you want to see what we are up to.
Soon, the new Animal Services Guide will
be ready. If you would like to help distribute the wonderful
guide to vet offices, shelters, companion animal supply
stores, etc, in your area - please let us know. Contact
rachelb@narn.org, and we will get you on the list of distribution
volunteers.
NARN needs you. Plug
in and help all animals.
And please keep Goodsearching for NARN at www.goodsearch.com
For all animals,
The NARN Board,
(Mark, Shelly,
Pete, Jenn, Andrew, David, Nancy & Rachel)
"board@narn.org."

Animal Rights Network is run solely by volunteers.

Imagine our shock when the USDA ruled
that boiling monkeys is a-okay. Actually, considering that
the USDA doesn't seem to care about the multiple unauthorized
surgeries on primates at the UW, we really aren't surprised.
KIRO announced on Monday that the USDA is not issuing any
violations for boiling a monkey alive. None. Imagine what
sort of things DO warrant violations from the USDA, SNBL
has received 133 violations.
To read the KIRO story, see:

say:

NARN is determined to not let this go by unnoticed. Stay
tuned for upcoming protest announcements and action alerts.
We should also take the time to encourage the Everett Police
Department to charge the individuals who put the monkey
in the cage washer, and their supervisor, with animal cruelty.
The police department needs to know the public will support
any animal cruelty charges against these people and not
castigate them for "wasting time on monkeys".
Please contact the Everett Chief of police and thank him
for assigning a detective to the case, and encourage him
to pursue animal cruelty charges:

I'm sure many of us have been hit
hard by the economic downturn, but as compassionate people,
I also know that the needs of others is very important to
us. Not a day goes by that I don't hear about the price
of food getting higher. Of course, when food gets more expensive,
and more people are having financial problems, that leads
to an increased demand at the food bank.
So what can us vegans and vegetarians do to help? We can
donate veg food to Northwest Harvest or other food banks.
Think about it. People going to food banks often don't get
much of a choice in what sort of food they get.
If each one of us were to donate an item of nonperishable
veg food (and not that 5 year old box of falafel mix sitting
in the back of your cupboard either), think of how many
people would have the option of eating a veg meal? Or at
least a meal with less meat. Instead of frank and beans,
they could have veggie chili, or a nice bowl of lentil soup.
By being generous with our own food, we can help the animals
- humans and non-humans alike.
Check out Northwest Harvest's public drop off locations
to see where you can donate your nonperishable food items:

The Washington Department of Fish
and Wildlife (WDFW) has has published a Draft Supplemental
Environmental Impact Statement (DSEIS). Please take some
time to review the DSEIS and provide your comments.
Changes are proposed to the 2003-09 Game Management Plan
Final Environmental Impact Statement to update the plan
for 2009-15.
New issues, objectives, and strategies are proposed based
on public and staff comments gathered over the past several
months.
We have until May 30 to comment on a draft
supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) recently
issued for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's
(WDFW) six-year game management plan.
This is YOUR chance to help wildlife in Washington State
by letting the WDFW know that you care about animals.

Management Plan to and access the comment form:

Terry Ave. N, Seattle)
NOAA (National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration) will be holding a public
comments session in order to gather information as they
consider the Makah Tribe's request to hunt whales.
This is YOUR chance to let NOAA know how you feel about
the unnecessary killing of whales. If you cannot make the
meeting, please see below for additional action you can
take.
NOAA's Fisheries Service released a draft environmental
impact statement (DEIS) and requested comments on the Makah
Indian Tribe's February 2005 request to resume limited hunting
of eastern north Pacific gray whales in the coastal portion
of the Tribe's usual and accustomed fishing grounds, off
the coast of Washington State, for ceremonial and subsistence
purposes.
The DEIS, prepared under the National Environmental Policy
Act (NEPA), considers various alternatives to the tribe's
proposed action. The alternatives include five different
hunting scenarios, plus an option of not allowing a hunt.
PLEASE TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTION:
* Read the draft proposal for a whale hunt: http://tinyurl.com/4km3rs
* Submit comments until June 8
--- by e-mail to MakahDEIS.nwr@noaa.gov, subject line Attn:
2008 Makah DEIS;
--- by mail to Steve Stone, NOAA Fisheries Northwest Region,
1201 N.E. Lloyd Blvd., Suite 1100, Portland, OR 97232; or
by fax to 503-230-5441, Attn: 2008 Makah DEIS.

opportunity to reach out to open-minded people about the
cruelty involved in raising animals for food. The more people
we have to help, the more people we can reach.
Contact Rachel at "rachelb@narn.org" to volunteer
or for the van's location the night of: 206-334-3742.
We are in great need of volunteers
to drive the van. Rachel will be saving
a parking spot for the evening, but someone else needs to
get the van. Please contact

“A coalition of animal welfare groups says it
has evidence that Ringling Bros. circus elephants are sometimes
chained for days at a time, and the groups asked a judge
Wednesday to halt the practice while a lawsuit comes to
trial. In federal court papers filed in Washington, the
groups said Ringling Bros.' own train records show that
the Asian elephants are chained in box cars for an average
of more than 26 straight hours, and often 60 to 70 hours
at a time, when the circus travels. In some cases, the elephants
have been chained on trains for 90 to 100 hours."

“Federal regulators
are investigating allegations that the largest US dairy
co-operative, Dairy Farmers of America, has manipulated
milk and cheese prices, and are separately reviewing a secret
transfer of cash to a former director of the organisation.
The farmer-owned co-operative, which controls a third of
the US milk supply, also faces anti-trust lawsuits by farmers
and retailers alleging it conspired to suppress prices it
paid for raw milk in the southeast of the country, while
raising prices to the region's retailers. Such tactics could
have the effect of boosting the co-op's profit as a middleman."

"For almost nine decades, cowboys and cowhands
have gathered at the Rowell Ranch in Castro Valley to take
part in the time honored tradition of the rodeo. But now
animal rights activists are leveling stinging accusations
of abuse against the rodeo, and they say they have video
to prove it."

“What they were
looking for, Carroll says, was an informant—someone
to show up at “vegan potlucks” throughout the
Twin Cities and rub shoulders with RNC protestors, schmoozing
his way into their inner circles, then reporting back to
the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, a partnership
between multiple federal agencies and state and local law
enforcement. The effort’s primary mission, according
to the Minneapolis division’s website, is to “investigate
terrorist acts carried out by groups or organizations which
fall within the definition of terrorist groups as set forth
in the current United States Attorney General Guidelines.”
