Get ready to march on the UW again

The group No New Animal Lab is organizing another important event: the second March on the University of Washington on Friday, October 2nd at 2 pm.

The timing lines up with the first week of the term, and students and faculty will be returning to campus. Let’s show them what’s going on at their school.

At the first march, back in April, 500 people marched through the UW campus and neighboring streets to show their support for the animals and against UW and Skanska’s plans. It was a watershed moment for the animal liberation movement.

The April March on UW

This time, on October 2nd, let’s increase the numbers. People of all ages and from all walks of life will be traveling from around the country to join the match and show their solidarity.

Please share the event widely on social media—Facebook, twitter, Instagram—and use the hashtags #MarchOnUW and #NoNewAnimalLab to spread the word and encourage people to attend.

For more info, read the latest post from No New Animal Lab, and check out their Facebook event page.

Be there and be a voice to animals!

Support legislation for modern, non-animal testing

Animals suffer in the name of science.

Today, companies are legally required to conduct animal testing on chemicals. Hundreds of thousands of animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and rats suffer painful burns, ulcers, or vomiting and convolutions, and ultimately, death.

They die in vain, because the required tests are inefficient and don’t accurately predict toxic effects in humans. Animal testing isn’t the best way to test for safety in humans. It’s not good for animals, and it’s not good for people.

Fortunately, a new bipartisan bill, The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act (S. 697), is being introduced. The bill does two things: it strengthens oversight of potentially dangerous chemicals; and it also features strong provisions to modernize the way testing is conducted.

The bill includes with sections that instruct government agencies to implement alternative methods to animal testing. This is more cost-effective, and innately more humane.

Action:

Find your Senator in the list in this link, and contact them to let them know that  you support modern, non-animal testing methods. Ask them to support S. 697, The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act.

You can also fill out this form from the American Anti-Vivisection Society. It will be sent directly to your representative.

Help save the New York Blood Center chimps

You may have heard about a group of chimpanzees who are in a horrible predicament. They’ve spent their lives as research subjects in Liberia.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the New York Blood Center (NYBC), the organization that exploited the chimps in the name of “science” recently walked away from its obligation to feed and care for the chimps for the rest of their lives.

NYBC had been spending $30,000 a month on 66 chimps, who are no longer being tested on and are living on secluded islands near the country’s capital, Monrovia. But they cut funding and the chimps, many with hepatitis and other viruses, are at risk of dying from dehydration and starvation.

Leading military contractor abuses animals and service members

New disturbing information has surfaced about horrific animal abuse at Deployment Medicine International (DMI), a military trauma training contractor. For all the info, see the details at all-creatures.org.

Deployment Medicine International (DMI), the self-proclaimed “largest trainer of US military forces in operational medicine,” is the subject of an exposé by PETA, in which thousands of live animals are violently shot, stabbed, dismembered and killed each year.

Eyewitness video footage released by PETA and related documents reveal shocking abuse of animals, racism, homophobia, sexism and reported physical and sexual assault of military service members by a leading military training contractor.

The investigation documented a training course attended by members of the Navy, Air Force and civilians led by DMI. In the eyewitness video, instructors shot and cut up live pigs for disgusting “training” exercises.

One DMI instructor told students that Muslims “would be even better” than using pigs for the training. Other DMI staff made inappropriate sexual and homophobic remarks to the students during the course.

The Virginia Board of Medicine recently suspended the medical license of DMI’s president for his alleged sexual assault and other physical abuse of service members.

Shooting, stabbing, and otherwise maiming animals is an ineffective and crude way to teach human medicine. Please speak up.

Action:

Tell your Congressional Representatives to SUPPORT the Battlefield Excellence through Superior Training (BEST) Practices Act (S. 587/H.R. 1095) which will finally end the use of animals in crude military training courses.

Take action against Primate Products Inc.

Primate Products Inc. is not just a primate dealer. It’s a house or horrors for the primates confined there. PPI, in Hendry County, Florida, imports, warehouses, and sells monkeys destined for experiments. They have federal contracts worth more than $13 million (including by the NIH, the Army, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

This horrific operation neglect, abuse, and terrorize monkeys. They’ve been cited by the USDA for violating animal welfare regulations–yet the abuse continues.

Please click this link and sign the petition at the end of the page. The content isn’t pleasant, but please think of the monkeys trapped in this hellhole. Do it for them.

It’s your opportunity to ask officials in Hendry County, Florida, to take action against PPI and close it for good.

March on the UW

What: Rally against the proposed UW animal lab
Where: University of Washington, Red Square
When: This Saturday, April 25th, at 2 pm

march on uw

The University of Washington is planning to expand their animal testing facilities. Come to the UW this Saturday and join a rally, demonstration, and march against these horrible plans.

Despite public opposition–and modern science and reason–UW is moving forward with the lab. Skanza, the construction company working with the university, has already cordoned off the area of the proposed lab.

If you oppose animal testing, please join the march on the University of Washington. THe event coincides with World Week for Animals in Laboratories, and will be a great chance to raise awareness of this issue.

Lauren Gazzola of the SHAC7 and Center for Constitutional Rights will be just one of the special speakers at the event.

Stop the lab!

For more info , see the event invitation on facebook, and check out the group organizing the event, No New Animal Lab.

Action Alert: No New Animal Lab

NARN would like to pass along important information from the No New Animal Lab Campaign:

The University of Washington continues to invest in outdated animal research methods. Animal labs throughout the world have been shutting down but the UW, on the other hand, has decided to spend over $123 million on building a new animal research facility.

The University of Washington’s history of using animals in research includes being fined by the USDA for allowing a primate to starve to death, citations for performing unauthorized experiments on primates, and evidence of primates engaging in self-mutilation. The UW uses and kills thousands of animals—primates, mice, pigs, rabbits, cats, and others—every year, and they all suffer and die behind closed doors.

It is time for the University of Washington to join the growing trend towards no longer using animals in research.

Stand up and tell the University of Washington and Skanska, the construction company that currently has the contract to build the lab, that we will not stand for a new larger animal research lab.

Check out the No New Animal Lab Facebook page for event info and email info@nonewanimallab.com if you have any questions. For more information about the campaign, or to help organize demos, visit NoNewAnimalLab.com.

Shocking animal cruelty at federal laboratory

Did you get a chance to read the New York Times article about the horrific federal laboratory in Nebraska? The lab conducts research on farmed animals to benefit the meat industry. They receive millions of dollar a year in our money–taxpayer funds–to torture and abuse animals (the experiments are so gruesome even people in the animal agriculture industry are appalled).

The article exposes experiments conducted at the 50-year-old U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, including:

  • Newborn sheep being left to die in open fields–intentionally.
  • A young, restrained cow who suffering broken legs and died while being repeatedly mounted by six bulls.
  • Stalls so small that piglets are crushed by their mothers.
  • Deliberate high-risk pregnancies that result in deformed babies.
  • Testing for extreme heat tolerance.
  • Failure to provide adequate veterinary care to animals.
  • Animals starving to death in plain view of “caretakers.”

Sadly, cows, pigs, and sheep are excluded from protection under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Only Congress can stop such egregious animal suffering by making changes to the Act.

The American Anti-Vivisection Society has put together a great page to help you reach out to your legislators.

Please tell your legislators that you are outraged that federal government funds are used for such cruelty and that it must be stopped. Politely tell them that ALL animals deserve protection under the Animal Welfare Act.

Tell Skanska not to build a primate lab!

Have you called Skanza yet? Please join two groups–Don’t Expand UW Primate Testing and Portland Animal Liberation–for an important campaign to help animals.

skanska

From the campaign’s Facebook page:

Skanska USA is contracted to build the University of Washington’s new Animal Research and Care Facility, so it’s time to tell them to not build it! If they don’t build the lab, animals can’t be tortured in it — it’s that simple. So let’s show Skanska USA how simple it is.

You can take action right now by calling and emailing Skanksa USA to tell them to pull their contracts with UW. Let Skanska know that you and many more say NO NEW ANIMAL LAB!

EMAIL

Sample script:

Dear [Skanska contact],

I am writing to express my concern and opposition to your involvement with the animal research industry. According to reports from the University of Washington, Skanska USA is scheduled to begin construction this April on the UW’s new Animal Research and Care Facility at 1450 NE Boat Street, Seattle.

The University of Washington’s history of using animals in research includes being fined by the USDA for allowing a primate to starve to death, citations for performing unauthorized experiments on primates, and evidence of primates engaging in self-mutilation. The UW uses and kills thousands of animals—primates, dogs, mice, pigs, rabbits, cats, and others—each year, even though animal labs throughout the world have been shutting down due to public pressure, citations for the abuse and neglect of animals, activists’ exposure of the horrific conditions of labs, and a realization that the future of science is in innovative methods that produce more accurate results than using animals.

If Skanska USA builds this new facility for the University of Washington, you will be entangling your company with the UW’s proven, and very public, record of animal cruelty. I implore you to break your contract with UW. Do not follow through with construction of the facility. Do not involve yourself with the animal research industry any further.

A company that claims to be committed to the environment should not dirty its hands with the blood and waste of vivisection.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Tell the UW Regents: No new animal labs

Please join the people at “Don’t Expand UW Primate Testing” for a phone and email action.

All week, from November 9th through 13th, people are needed to call the Regents at UW. Here are details from the Don’t Expand US Primate Testing Facebook event:

UW Regents

In what appears to be an attempt to try to get around Don’t Expand UW Primate Testing’s lawsuit against the University of Washington Board of Regents for a secret decision to approve a new Animal Research and Care Facility, the Regents’ agenda for their Regular Meeting this week includes: “Approve Construction of the ARCF Project at the Preferred Site Underneath Portage Bay Vista.”

Leading up to the Regents’ last vote on the animal lab, people called and emailed them at the Regent phone number and email address. But since that time, we have learned that the Regents did not get those messages. Rather than take the time to learn about people’s concerns about the lab, the Regents let their office just pass the messages over to the UW’s animal research department to send their biased replies to people.

So leading up to the Regents’ vote on the new lab this week, we’re going to make sure that they hear from the concerned public. Please call and email them at their direct phone numbers and email addresses to tell them that they need to do their jobs and actually learn about all the reasons to NOT approve construction of a new animal research facility, and ask them to vote NO on building the new facility.

Remember to keep your calls and emails polite and on point! After you call and email, please post about what the response was!
