Urgent: Turtle Race “Fundraiser” Needs Canceling

This is not really a race between turtles.  In this very rare instance, that might actually be preferable. No, this race is between TEN THOUSAND PLASTIC turtles, dumped into Mustang Bayou, that  flows into the Gulf of Mexico by a Texas SCHOOL, in the name of “fundraising”.
dead-bird-plastic-belly-feaThis is in spite of the fact that something like TWENTY MILLION TONS of plastiCRAP enter the world’s oceans each year, bringing a slow and agonizing death to more than a million seabirds (see above) and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles.
This massive plastic dump, organized by Alvin Independent School District in Southeast Texas, is due to take place on February 8.  School officials claim they do their best to find all the plastic turtles again. But a single extra piece of deadly plasticrap is too much.
Please, act quickly! Write and urge Alvin Independent School District officials to replace this event with one that won’t pose a threat to animals or the environment. And please forward this alert far and wide!

About Franziska

I've been a vegetarian for almost 30 years now, since adopting my first dog, and vegan for more than 10. Why? The simplest and truest answer is that I love animals, and knowing what happens to them just to satisfy selfish human desires makes consuming any animal products impossible. I am a NARN Board member because its goals, beliefs, and ethics are mine, and because nothing is ever done that doesn't have only the animals at heart. There are no politics, no factions, no arguments, no personal motives. As for my favorite quote, it is beyond a doubt Ralph Waldo Emerson's "The purpose of life is not to be happy. The purpose of life is to be useful. To be useful, compassionate, honorable, and to have it matter that you lived."
