Fight over wild wolves reignited by plan to kill as many as 4
Five years after wild wolves began returning to the state, a long-simmering conflict between wolves and livestock has exploded with a vengeance, as state sharpshooters attempt to kill some of the predators that recently killed a rancher’s cows in Northwest Washington.

 

Harvard Dead Monkeys Make Top 10 List for Lab Violations
Harvard Medical School logged its latest lab-monkey death this past spring when a cotton-top tamarin monkey died of thirst for lack of a water bottle. Then 41 deer mice died in April at a Harvard facility after their water source got cut off.  As with the monkey, the U.S. Department of Agriculture gave the country’s oldest institution of higher learning an official warning. In less than two years, four monkeys have died in Harvard labs, including one left in a cage as it went through a mechanical washer.

 

More black Americans are giving up meat and dairy. 
While there are no firm numbers, anecdotal evidence indicates a rising interest in vegetarianism and veganism among black Americans. In fact, their interest has contributed to the growing list of Internet sites and cookbooks geared to that group, including By Any Greens Necessary by Tracye Lynn McQuirter; Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy, & Creative African American Cuisine by Bryant Terry, and The Ethnic Vegetarian by Angela Shelf Medearis.

 

Vegan Feud
Peruse the scintillating trade literature of the meat industry and you’ll find that of all the forces currently arrayed against the livestock industry (drought, corn prices, opposition to subsidies, the vegan Skinny Bitch empire), none evokes as much vitriol as the Humane Society of the United States, or HSUS.  Nevertheless, as the abolitionists correctly point out, there’s nothing especially revolutionary about HSUS’s approach to improving the lives of farm animals. HSUS works closely with Big Agriculture, never calls for animal liberation, and never explicitly endorses the habit that most efficiently prevents animals from being killed: veganism. This reticence infuriates abolitionists, who seek the eradication of not only animal agriculture but also all animal ownership and exploitation through ethical veganism.  Francione’s logic is hard-hitting, but his extreme message is unlikely to resonate widely in a population that’s only 1.4 percent vegan. According to social psychologist and longtime vegan Melanie Joy, the abolitionist approach could attract a lot more supporters if it acknowledged, as HSUS does, that most people are going to embrace veganism on their own—you can’t strong-arm them into it.

 

Farm Use of Antibiotics Defies Scrutiny
Eighty percent of the antibiotics sold in the United States goes to chicken, pigs, cows and other animals that people eat, yet producers of meat and poultry are not required to report how they use the drugs — which ones, on what types of animal, and in what quantities. This dearth of information makes it difficult to document the precise relationship between routine antibiotic use in animals and antibiotic-resistant infections in people, scientists say.

 

Going Vegan: The Right Choice For President Clinton And Me
Clinton’s decision to go vegan was more of a necessity than a choice. He knew that if he didn’t change something he’d probably die. But there are multitude of other reasons to go vegan or vegetarian. For some, it’s discontent with the large scale factory farms, that often pump animals with hormones, additives and fillers. It’s the inhumane conditions at these farms — in which animals live in small, cramped pens for the entirety of their lives and then die. For others, it’s a question of morals or spirituality. For me, it’s all of the above.

 

Dairies Curtailing Cow-Tail Cutting
The U.S. dairy industry is moving to abandon the little-known but pervasive practice of removing tails from cows, a new victory for activists who say they are seeking to improve the treatment of farm animals.  The National Milk Producers Federation, the largest dairy-industry group, said recently it would oppose tail docking in its animal-care program, which is used by producers of more than one-third of the nation’s milk.

When three shoe-industry professionals met in 2009 to start their own company, they were not driven by ideals of sustainability, veganism or even durability. Instead, they wanted to find a creative independence that had been missing in their corporate offices.

 

Vegan pest control
Pest control is often a dilemma for many vegans. As an ethical vegan your compassion for life should not stop for a living being just because they are considered a pest. You may not like spiders and rats but that is not a reason to kill them, especially when there are other options available.

I had previously been vegetarian for 7 years because I finally made the connection that beef came from cows and pork came from pigs (duh, I know).
